'Inherit the Wind' Project and Darwin/Scopes Trial Inspired Hand-Crochet 'Monkey Dress'...

The theme of this project was Charles Darwin to coincide with Darwin's 200th Birthday Celebrations in London, namely the Darwin Exhibition at the Natural History Museum. I was inspired by the lack of attention given to the Scopes 'Monkey Trial' in the exhibition. The trial, held in 1925 in Dayton, Tennesse (my home state), brought Darwin's evolution theory to attention of the common man.

I began with researching 1920's knit garments and came up some simple, loose flapper dress shapes:







The crochet stitch in the body of the final dress paired with the yarn used creates an almost dreadlock-like appearance. The shoulders were finished with a loop stitch to mimic the shoulders of a gorilla.
